OVHcloud provides our customers with a wide array of options for managing their public cloud instances. In this article, we will go over some of the various options available to our customers in the instance menu below:
Topics
Editing an Instance
If you click the Edit button in the instance menu, you will be able to edit various attributes of the instance including its size.
Other options in this screen can also be handled from the main menu.
Switch to Monthly Subscription
If an instance was created with hourly billing selected, you can always switch it to monthly billing, which will be less expensive if you plan to keep the instance for an extended period of time. To do so, click the Switch to monthly subscription button, followed by the Confirm button from the pop-up.
Warning: Customers with monthly subscriptions will not be able to switch to hourly billing. Please ensure that a monthly subscription makes more sense for you before choosing to make the switch.
Creating a Backup
The Create a backup button allows the user to create a snapshot backup, a copy of the entire file system of an instance.
Note: There is not a charge for the snapshot backup itself. However, because the snapshot is stored outside of a customer's public cloud, there is a monthly charge for the storage a snapshot consumes.
Click the Take a snapshot button to save a backup of your instance.
Reboot in Rescue Mode
If configuration changes are made to an instance that renders it inaccessible, you can access the instance via Rescue Mode. To do so, click the Reboot in rescue mode button and you will be taken to the following screen:
You can choose from a wide variety of Linux flavors in the "My image" drop-down menu or you can use the default option, "Made-in-OVH Rescue Distribution". Once you have selected your image, click the Restart button to proceed, and you will see the following screen:
Regardless of whether you use the randomly generated password or the SSH key you configured on the instance, you will have to use the "root" username in the Rescue Mode environment.
Note: If you choose to use the same SSH key to access your Rescue Mode environment that you use to access the instance normally, bear in mind that the SSH key fingerprint will have changed. As a result, you will need to clear your local known_hosts
file for the key to authenticate.
Reboot
There are two options for rebooting your instance - Soft reboot and Hard reboot. A soft reboot requests that all running processes complete their current task and terminate. A hard reboot forces all running processes to terminate immediately without giving them an opportunity to complete any active tasks.
Warning: A hard reboot should only be performed when a soft reboot is not an option as a hard reboot prevents the OS from properly shutting down. This can result in data loss or corruption.
Conclusion
Managing a public cloud instance with OVHcloud is a seamless process via the OVHcloud Manager. For more information about various tasks you can perform using Public Cloud Services, please check out the Public Cloud Services section.
