Creating a Virtual MAC for a Failover IP in the OVHcloud Manager
In this section, we will be creating a vMAC (virtual MAC address) to be used by the NIC (Network Interface Card) which ESXi assigns to a VM. To begin, log in to the OVHcloud Manager. On the left-hand sidebar click the IP option.
Choose the Failover IP you wish to configure to your VM and click the ellipses (...) button next to it. Then, select the Add a virtual MAC option from the drop-down menu.
In the popup menu, change the "Type" to "vmware" and enter the name of your virtual machine.
Adding a Virtual MAC to the Virtual Machine's NIC in ESXi
In this step, we will be pairing the vMAC, which we generated in the first section, to the interface that ESXi has assigned to the VM. To complete this step, your VM must be powered off.
In ESXi, right-click your VM and select the Edit settings option from the drop-down menu.
Then, select the drop-down next to "Network Adapter 1" and change the "MAC Address" field to Manual. Enter the vMAC created in the OVHcloud Manager into the "MAC Address" field.
Configuring Network Settings in the Operating System
The steps required to configure network settings depend on the OS the VM is running. Please click on the link from the list below that corresponds to the OS that is installed on the VM:
After completing the steps in a configuring networking for a VM guide, you will have a VM in VMware ESXi 6.5 that is fully connected to the Internet.
Connecting your VM to the Internet is an essential task before it can be used as a web server, a mail server, or whatever other use you have in mind. Having read this article, you should be familiar with the first steps that are required to connect a VM to the Internet using VMware ESXi 6.5.
