At OVHcloud, we understand that data runs the world. That is why we offer robust backup solutions at different levels to meet the needs of all of our customers. In this article, we will cover the Standard and Advanced versions of Veeam Backup in an HPC (Hosted Private Cloud) environment.
Prerequisites
Topics
Veeam Standard and Advanced
OVHcloud offers multiple versions of Veeam Backup: Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise. For information on the Enterprise version, please check out our Getting Started with Veeam Backup & Replication (Enterprise) article.
Before we get started, let's take a look at the following chart, which describes the differences between the Standard and Advanced version:
Note: The "X" in the Veeam Advanced column indicates that the backup time can be customized.
Data Center Backup Activation
Now that we are familiar with the Standard and Advanced version, let's activate the backup function.
To begin, log in to the OVH US Manager. Then, select the Hosted Private Cloud option from the left-hand column followed by the private cloud environment (e.g., OVH US Example - Private C...).
Then, select the data center under the environment for which you would like to activate the backup feature.
From the data center screen, select the Backup tab and then click Activate the backup.
From the "Backup activation" pop-up window, select the version from the drop-down menu that works best for your needs.
Note: For our example, we selected the "Veeam Advanced Backup" option.
Lastly, click the Enable button.
With Veeam backup enabled, let's proceed with backing up an individual VM.
Virtual Machine Backup
To begin, log in to the VMware vSphere Web Client. For more information on accessing vSphere, please check out our Overview of Hosted Private Cloud article.
Warning: Please ensure that the vSphere user possesses the "Add resources" right because it is required to enable the backup of a VM. For more information about user rights, please check out our How to Manage Users and Security with Hosted Private Cloud article.
With your HPC environment address (e.g., pcc-xxx-xxx-xx-xx.ovh.us) selected under the "Navigator" pane, select the VMs tab in the main workplace. If you would like to learn more about the vSphere Web Client interface, please consult the VMware vSphere 6.5 Documentation Center provided by VMware.
Under the "Virtual Machines" section: right-click a VM (e.g., OVH US Example) > highlight OVH Private Cloud > select the Backup Management option.
Review the information in the "Backup Management" pop-up window and click the ENABLE BACKUP ON THIS VM button.
Note: In the "Backup Management" pop-up window, the pencil icon appears to the right of the words "Global parameters" because with the Advanced version you can set the time in which we would like the backup to be performed.
Additionally, after enabling the backup option, more details are displayed when accessing the Backup Management pop-up window.
Lastly, notice that the "Backup state" changed from "Not activated" to "Enabled" and now a "RESTORE BACKUP" and "DISABLE BACKUP ON THIS VM" button exists.
Conclusion
You should now have a good understanding of how to add a Veeam backup solution to your data center via the OVH US Manager as well as how to enable the backup for your virtual machine via the vSphere Web Client.
