This article will cover an array of general networking knowledge that will be helpful when using OVH US products. We will learn about a Failover IP (a/k/a Floating IP), IP Aliasing, and how to troubleshoot networking issues.
A FoIP (Failover IP) is an address that is not permanently assigned to a NIC (Network Interface Card), which means it can be used for such purposes as IP aliasing or assigning it to a VM. IP aliasing is associating more than one IP address to a NIC. This allows a single NIC to have multiple connections to a network each serving a different purpose.
Additionally, with IP aliasing a server can have different IP addresses without the need to install separate NICs for each of them.
Note: Please keep in mind that configuring an IP alias (i.e., a subinterface or virtual interface) varies from operating system to operating system. We recommend consulting the documentation for the operating system in question.
Ping (Packet Internet Groper) is a method of sending packets from one device to another over the Internet as a way of testing network connectivity. To test using
ping, open a Terminal session and use an IP address or a domain name as in the following example:
$ ping x.x.x.x
Traceroute is a network diagnostic tool that tracks the path of data between two points and the transit time, which can help to identify the cause of latency. Like ping,
traceroute can use an IP address or a domain name. Example:
$ traceroute x.x.x.x
Network latency is the result of how much time it takes for a data packet to get from one point to another. OVH US has an IP you can use to test latency the IP is 22.214.171.124. To test latency, you can also use the tool SmokePing. SmokePing is a latency measurement tool for network connections.
